Cultural Survival

In 2003, when the Kurdish troops moved into some of the Shabak areas, they began to be called "Kurd Shabaks", ultimately stealing their identity.  This caused the Shabak people to enter into a new threat of genocide.  In 2005, they began to demonstrate because they were so angered that they were no longer recognized as their own independent ethnic group in Iraq.  Some men belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party began to shoot at the crowd, causing many to become injured. Starting in 2006, the Shabak people were under a thought out plan given under the Kurdish parties to take over their culture, language, and ethnic rights.
